The cries of women and children fills the basement of the Balee Mauseuraya Aceh (BMA) Building, Banda Aceh City on Wednesday (27/12). After the Rohingya people finished their Zuhur prayer, a group of university students forced their way into the basement, wearing almamater jackets of their universities. They screamed, threw and kick the refugees’ belongings in the basement; playing the blind and deaf game against the cries of the present children and women. They also forced the unfortunate refugees to walk their way to a truck they provided with the intention to kick them off the property.

The UNHCR, or more commonly known as the UN Body for Refugees, stated that the actions of these university students which is an alliance of students from Aceh stems from an online campaign rooted from misinformation, call of hatred, as well as disinformation directed to the Rohingyan refugees. Statement of the UNHCR is reflected on their social media content. There were narrations present in the digital space that seemed to lean towards an act of discrimination towards the refugees. These posts often contain contents such as the argument that the present Rohingyan refugees are intending to colonize Indonesia, or other arguments portraying the generalized and biased view on the negative actions of the refugees during their stay.

There are two phenomenon that can be seen presently. Firstly, the post-truth phenomenon on social media report. Second, the decrease in morality caused by two things: lack of empathy and logical fallacy.

Post Truth Restriction

On November 2016, Oxford Dictionary hailed the post-truth as “word of the year” concerning its link with the ongoing presidential election momentum in the United States and the referendum in the United Kingdom which caused the Brexit (Britain Exit, which refers to the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union). In the Oxford Dictionary, post-truth is defined as a situation where an objective fact does not hold any effect in changing the public opinion compared to factors that changes the emotion or personal beliefs. The word post in post truth does not mean “surpass,” instead, it refers to “fact does not matter,” and that the most important thing would be the bending of truth and adjusted to the interpretation, opinion, and belief of the people.
