HAKORDIA: “Clean 2024 Election Gives Rise to High Quality, Honest, and Fair Leader”

In lights of the celebration for The World’s Anti-Corruption Day (HAKORDIA), the Anti-Corruption Community (KOMUTASI) of Universitas Atma Jaya Yogyakarta held a public discussion themed “Clean 2024 Election Gives Rise to High Quality, Honest, and Fair Leader.” The event was held last week on Saturday, 9 December 2023 at the Conference Room (RKF) of the Santo Alfonsus Building, inviting 2 guest speakers: Vice Chairman of the Klaten District Court, Mr. Budi Setyawan, S.H., M.H., and representative of the Central Java Ombudsman of the Republic of Indonesia, Sabarudin Hulu, S.H., M.H.

During his presentation, Mr. Budi touched on the subject of election from the criminal law perspective as well as a critical attitude in the search for leaders possessing anti-corruption, fairness, and integrity values. He quoted Ir. Soekarno, “Seribu orang tua hanya dapat bermimpi, tapi satu pemuda dapat mengubah dunia,” which means “A thousand old people can only dream, but a single young man can change the world.” Mr. Budi expressed his opinion, claiming that there are big hopes for the future generation to better Indonesia and to develop it further to be a greater and more prosperous country. This is due to the youth spirit possessed by the younger generation.

Mr. Budi expressed that younger generation of Indonesia must posses more awareness and care towards the upcoming 2024 presidential election. He further reminded for those who are a part of KOMUTASI to vote with careful considerations. He also reminded everyone to use their voting rights and to not indulge in abstention. Mr. Budi asked participants to observe and evaluate the candidates prior to casting a vote for the 2024 elections. According to him, equipped leaders are not only those who can sit and place orders amongst their lower ranked officers, but rather those who can lead, influence, and guide his or her nation to the mutual goal. “(because) power has the tendency to be corrupt. There were a lot of ex-convicts that advance themselves as a legislative candidate. Therefore, we should pay attention to the backgrounds and characters of the candidates,” he claimed.

Mr. Sabarudin also expressed a similar note. According to him, leaders must act progressive and participative in serving the public interest. “Public service must be fulfilled, whether in the context of development, opening to access, as well as guarantee for the creation of prosperity of the people,” he claimed.

He further notes that integrity is a quality public service providers must possess. This is because, according to Mr. Sabarudin, integrity is a form of the government’s commitment to provide a service that puts forward the integrity and morality of their work to create a government system that is good and clean. “Here, Ombudsman of the Republic of Indonesia is responsible to observe the conduct of the government in carrying out their duties; we have the authority to report violations upon discover,” the Ombudsman officer claimed.

At the end of the presentation, Pak Sabaharudin reminded participants to pay attention to the values that must be retained by future leaders that will be voted for, which includes honesty, care, independence, discipline, hardworking, humble, brave, and fair. He added, “Fair elections will birth leaders ready to take on the duty to serve the country and bring forth prosperity for the people.”
