NEUST Visiting Lecturer Delivers “Introduction to Criminology” at FH UAJY

On Tuesday (07/10) The Faculty of Law, Universitas Atma Jaya Yogyakarta (UAJY) hosted Ms. Cristina Virginia B. Jimmy, Jr. from the Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology (NEUST) as a visiting lecturer on Tuesday, delivering a session titled “Introduction to Criminology.” The guest lecture formed part of UAJY’s efforts to enrich comparative legal education and expose students to interdisciplinary perspectives in criminal justice studies.

Addressing undergraduate law students, Ms. Jimmy outlined criminology as the systematic study of crime, criminal behavior, and society’s responses to lawbreaking. She traced the field’s development from classical perspectives, emphasizing rational choice and deterrence to positivist approaches that consider biological, psychological, and social factors influencing criminality. The lecture also highlighted contemporary strands, including sociological theories of deviance, victimology, and evidence-based crime prevention.

In discussing crime causation, Ms. Jimmy encouraged students to examine how social environment, economic inequality, and institutional dynamics shape opportunities for offending and patterns of victimization. She underscored the role of data and empirical methods in informing policing strategies and public policy, noting that effective criminal justice practice depends on rigorous research as well as respect for human rights.

By situating criminology at the intersection of law, society, and policy, the lecture offered FH UAJY students a foundational roadmap for navigating complex debates on crime control, rights protection, and justice system effectiveness skills deemed essential for future legal professionals in Indonesia and beyond.

The visiting lecture aligns with UAJY’s commitment to global academic collaboration, giving students access to international expertise and comparative frameworks. Faculty representatives welcomed the engagement and expressed hope for further cooperation with NEUST, including joint seminars, short courses, and research exchanges that advance scholarship in criminal law and policy.
